Lynden, WA- Certain teas are rich sources of special antioxidants called flavonoids, which are considered to be some of the most potent antioxidants in nature. Scientists believe antioxidants in the diet have an important role to play in the fight against diseases including cancer. Intensive research is currently underway into flavonoids and how they may help protect the body from potentially harmful substances called free radicals, which cause cellular damage, including disruption of the genetic material DNA.

Flor-Essence, a popular herbal tonic, has been used by patients worldwide to treat a variety of chronic conditions. Research has revealed the formula possesses numerous healing components including trace elements, minerals and phytoestrogens, as well as antioxidants. A literature review conducted by the University of Texas Center for Alternative Medicine Research (UT-CAM) identified 107 references on the principal herbs used in Flor-Essence. The eight herbs are Burdock root, Turkish rhubarb root, Sheep sorrel, Slippery elm bark, Watercress, Blessed Thistle, Red Clover and Kelp.

Flora, Inc., the manufacturer, conducted a 16 month pattern of use survey of cancer patients in conjunction with the University of Texas Center for Alternative Medicine. The survey results evaluated the influence of Flor-Essence on the quality of life during conventional cancer therapy. Out of the 5051 respondents they found that 75.5% of people surveyed used the herbal tonic for cancer, 14.4% for arthritis, 1 % MS and 14.5% other. Over 73% of users found the results of the tea to be "Very Good" to "Excellent" (43 and 30% respectively) and 24% found the results satisfactory (figure 1). In a more in-depth survey questionnaire of cancer patients generated from the broad survey mentioned above, it was found that 40.6% of cancer patients revealed no cancer progression, 31.5% had more energy, and 22.3% experienced an improvement in related symptoms (figure 2).

In summary, a significant proportion of the patients appeared to feel better and benefit from the tonic which has led the company to accelerate its clinical development. While further clinical trials are needed, this survey adds support to an increasing body of evidence that the herbal ingredients in Flor-Essence are strongly linked to protection against cellular damage. As a result, Flora, Inc. plans to initiate a clinical research study by the end of the year 2000 at the Xiu Chi Institute for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine Research at Vancouver General Hospital. Clinical trials conducted by the Russian Ministry of Health have already been completed on Flor-Essence for treating gastrointestinal problems suffered by victims of Chernobyl.
